Book design for John O'Carroll

John O’Carroll

John O’Carroll is one of our longstanding clients, an international artist, who had approached us initially to design a book to catalogue his artworks.

We created the first book back in 2008 and are helping creating John’s next one. This project was a delight – John’s artwork delves into Egypt’s history, reflects dramatic Dutch landscapes and draws from our very own ancient Cornwall.

Our design was intentionally subtle, so as to allow the artworks to speak for themselves. We used John’s handwriting for chapter headings, as well as his signature stamp of the Cornish maze.

Colour correction was a large part of producing this book, as each of John’s pieces are meticulously created and we wanted to reflect them accurately.

We also needed to consider the audience, John often exhibits in Amsterdam so the text was displayed in both Dutch and English. The Separate translations mirror each other as we considered the harmony of the design.

John’s book has been a valuable tool to spread the word of his work, we have also created a digital version to send to galleries.

Over the years we have designed John invitations for his exhibitions, and more recently we re-designed his website.

The first website we designed for John was inspired by the spreads of his book, the recent site took the design on that step further.

The Home page for Cornwall based artist John O'Carroll

View website

The Home page has large sliding images that highlight the spectrum of mediums John’s artworks take. We also have a feature box linking to the Blog, the latest artwork from John’s ‘New’ page and also an artwork picked at random from his archive. The archive is still being collated but is a great resource for seeing John’s evolving style.

Web page about John O'Carroll's artworks in Egypt

John has always had a connection to Egypt, through archaeological digs and drawing of artefacts. We composed a page on his website to highlight this. The website follows a simple grid using the soft greys from his book.

The Contact page for John O'Carroll's website with galaxy contact form

For the Contact page we used one of John’s beautiful paintings to serve as the background to the contact form. The website features a blog for John to update with studio work, archive albums of his previous artworks and his most recent work featured as a gallery.
